Stamp Your Own Background – Make This Autumnal Card With Me. – Simply Leaves – Crafting with Ashee – Independent Stampin’ Up! Demo – UK.

There is something so satisfying about creating your own patterned background for a card, and today’s project is a perfect example of how you can get a beautiful autumnal look simply by stamping the same stamp in a few different colours.

For these cards, I have used the Simply Leaves stamp and punch set from Stampin’ Up! to create a background full of colourful leaves. I then added a few punched leaves over the top to give the cards some extra dimension.

The result is two cards with a lovely autumn feel, but the technique would work beautifully with lots of different colour combinations throughout the year.

Create Your Own Stamped Background

The first step is to create the background for the card.

Rather than using Designer Series Paper, I have made my own patterned paper by repeatedly stamping the leaves from the Simply Leaves stamp set onto a piece of white cardstock.

I used three colours for the leaves:

  • Cherry Cobbler
  • Daffodil Delight
  • Pumpkin Pie

I stamped the different leaf designs randomly across the cardstock, turning the stamps as I went. This helps to create a more natural-looking background and stops the pattern from looking too uniform.

Don’t worry about covering every single area. Leaving some white space between the leaves helps the colours stand out and keeps the design feeling light.

Add a Touch of Autumn Colour

The combination of Cherry Cobbler, Daffodil Delight and Pumpkin Pie works beautifully for an autumnal card.

These colours give the leaves that gorgeous mixture of deep reds, golden yellows and warm oranges that we naturally associate with autumn.

You could easily change the colours to suit a different season, though. Imagine using greens and blues for spring or shades of pink and purple for a completely different look.

Add Some Punched Leaves

Once the background was finished, I used the matching Simply Leaves punch to punch out some individual leaves.

I stamped the leaves first and then punched them out, so the punched pieces coordinate perfectly with the background.

I added a few of these leaves over the stamped background using dimensionals. This simple step makes such a difference because the raised leaves create depth and make some of the leaves appear to sit above the background.

I love how the stamped leaves and punched leaves work together. You get the look of a detailed patterned paper, but with the added interest of individual leaves that you can touch and see standing proud from the card.

Choose Your Card Base

For these two cards, I used Cajun Craze and Cherry Cobbler for the card bases.

Both colours work particularly well with the stamped leaves and give the cards that lovely warm autumnal feel.

The Cherry Cobbler layer also helps to frame the stamped background and makes the colours of the leaves really pop.

Add the Sentiment

To finish the cards, I added the sentiment “A little something to say hello”.

I kept the sentiment fairly simple so that it didn’t compete with the busy leaf background. The stamped leaves are definitely the star of these cards!

Why Not Make Your Own Background?

If you have a stamp set that includes small images, why not try making your own background paper?

It is a great way to get more use from your stamps and gives you the freedom to create a background in exactly the colours you want.

You can also experiment with different arrangements. Try stamping the images close together for a busier background, or leave more white space for a cleaner design.

The Simply Leaves stamp and punch set makes this technique particularly easy because you can stamp the leaves, punch some of them out and then combine both elements on the same card.

It is a simple technique, but the finished result looks much more complicated.
