Have you ever looked at a stamp set and wondered how you could create something different with just one stamp? Today’s project shows just how versatile a single stamp can be!

For these Christmas cards, I’ve used the Stitched Stocking stamp set to create my own patterned background. Instead of using Designer Series Paper, I stamped one image repeatedly to build a fun, modern pattern.

The best part? You only need one stamp and two coordinating colours to create this effect.

Create Your Own Patterned Background

I wanted to create a simple Christmas card with plenty of impact, so I started by choosing my two colours: Real Red and Garden Green.

The card bases are made using Real Red and Garden Green, giving each card a slightly different look while keeping the overall design coordinated.

For the background, I chose one stamp from the Stitched Stocking stamp set. Instead of stamping the image randomly, I repeated it across the piece of Basic White cardstock, changing the direction and positioning of the stamped images to create a woven, almost fabric-like pattern.

This is such an easy technique, but the finished background looks much more complicated than it actually is!

How to Stamp a Repeating Pattern

The secret to creating a background like this is not to overthink it.

Start by stamping your chosen image in one colour. Then add the same image in your second colour, filling in the spaces between the first set of images.

For my cards, I used Real Red and Garden Green together. The contrast between the two colours makes the pattern really stand out, while the repeated image gives the background a lovely sense of movement.

You don’t need to cover every single space perfectly. In fact, the slightly irregular arrangement adds to the handmade feel of the card.

Keep the Design Simple

Once I had created my stamped background, I didn’t want to cover too much of it with additional decoration.

The patterned background is the star of the card, so I kept the rest of the design quite simple.

I added a Christmas sentiment to a piece of Basic White cardstock and punched it out using the Rounded Rectangle Punch. I then layered it onto a coordinating piece of cardstock before adding it to the card front.

The sentiment gives the eye somewhere to focus without hiding too much of the stamping.

One Stamp, So Many Possibilities

I really like techniques like this because they encourage you to look at your stamps differently.

You don’t always need lots of different images to create an interesting card. One stamp can be enough to create a complete background when you repeat it in different directions and colours.

You could try this technique with:

  • Two contrasting colours for a bold design
  • Two shades of the same colour for a softer look
  • Three or more colours for a playful background
  • A small image for a delicate pattern
  • A larger image for a more dramatic effect

You could even experiment with changing the spacing between your stamped images to create completely different patterns.

Measurements

  • Real Red / Garden Green Cardstock – A6 Card Base – This is an A4 sheet cut in half and folded in half.
  • Basic White Cardstock – 14.35cm X 10cm. X 2 pieces.

Create Your Own Christmas Card Background

The Stitched Stocking stamp set worked perfectly for this design, but this technique isn’t limited to Christmas cards. Look through your stamp collection and see which images could be repeated to create a pattern.

Small flowers, leaves, stars, hearts and geometric images can all work particularly well.

This is also a great way to make your own patterned paper when you don’t have quite the right Designer Series Paper for your project.

So next time you’re looking through your stamp sets, don’t just think about how each stamp can be used individually. Ask yourself:

“What would happen if I stamped this image again and again?”

You might be surprised at the beautiful backgrounds you can create!
