Are you looking for an easy Christmas card idea that adds a little sparkle and fun to your festive crafting? Today, I’m sharing two Christmas shaker cards featuring the adorable A Little Christmas Designer Series Paper (DSP) and the Christmas Mice dies. These cards are a lovely way to add movement, dimension and a little festive magic to your handmade Christmas cards.

I’ve created two versions using Cherry Cobbler and Mossy Meadow cardstock. Both colours feature in the A Little Christmas DSP, making it easy to coordinate your card layers and create a beautifully finished design.

The best part? The shaker window is filled with sequins, so the recipient can shake the card and watch the sparkle move around!

What Is a Shaker Card?

If you haven’t made a shaker card before, you’re in for a treat! A shaker card has a small window filled with loose embellishments, such as sequins, beads or glitter. A clear covering keeps everything safely inside while allowing the contents to move when the card is shaken.

Shaker cards are perfect for Christmas, birthdays and other special occasions. They look impressive, but once you understand the basic construction, they’re a fun technique to try with your favourite stamps, dies and patterned papers.

Choosing the Colours and Designer Series Paper

For these two cards, I used the A Little Christmas DSP, which features charming festive designs, including the delightful Christmas mice.

The first card uses Cherry Cobbler cardstock to complement the red bows in the patterned paper. For the second, I used Mossy Meadow, which picks up the lovely green tones in the DSP.

Using colours that already appear in your patterned paper is a simple way to create a coordinated design. It also makes choosing your cardstock much easier!

I added a white embossed layer behind the DSP to introduce some subtle texture without distracting from the main design.

Creating the Shaker Window

The focal point of both cards is the shaker window, cut using the Christmas Mice die set, which has a matching stamp set.

I love how the shape of the die creates a little window for the sequins to sparkle through. It adds interest to the card while allowing the cute Christmas design to remain the star of the show.

To make the shaker element, you’ll need a clear window covering and a way to create space for the sequins to move around inside. Foam adhesive is ideal for building up the edges of the window and keeping the sequins contained.

I used sequins from my stash in a mixture of silver and gold tones. They catch the light beautifully and add a lovely festive shimmer.

My tip: Before sealing your shaker window, check that the foam adhesive forms a complete barrier around the opening. Any gaps could allow the sequins to escape!

Adding the Finishing Touches

To finish the shaker element, I tied a bow using multicolour baker’s twine. The red, green and white colours complement the festive papers and bring the whole design together.

I stamped the Merry Christmas sentiment from the Christmas Mice stamp set and layered it onto a coordinating cardstock panel. The Cherry Cobbler version has a matching red sentiment, while the Mossy Meadow version uses green.

These small details make a difference. Repeating the colours from the card base in the sentiment and embellishments helps create a balanced design without making the card feel too busy.

Measurements

  • Cherry Cobbler / Mossy Meadow Cardstock – A6 Card Base – This is an A4 sheet cut in half, then folded in half.
  • Basic White Cardstock – 14.35cm X 10cm X 2 pieces
  • Cherry Cobbler / Mossy Meadow Cardstock – 13.35cm X 9cm.
  • Basic White Cardstock – 12.85cm X 8.5cm.

Two Christmas Cards, One Design

I love how changing the card base and patterned paper creates two slightly different looks while keeping the same basic layout.

The Cherry Cobbler version feels traditional and festive, with the red bows in the DSP tying everything together. The Mossy Meadow version has a lovely woodland Christmas feel, with the green cardstock complementing the little mice.

This is also a great way to make several Christmas cards in one crafting session. Once you’ve worked out the shaker window, you can repeat the design using different papers, colours and shaker embellishments.

You could even experiment with different sequins from your stash to create a completely different look!
