Are you looking for a handmade Christmas gift that is both beautiful and practical? This gorgeous handmade card holder is a wonderful way to store handmade greetings cards and envelopes, making it a thoughtful gift for any papercrafter or someone who loves sending cards to friends and family.

For this project, I have used the beautiful A Little Christmas Designer Series Paper (DSP) to decorate two coordinating card holders. One is made using Cherry Cobbler cardstock, while the other features Lost Lagoon cardstock. Both colour combinations work beautifully with the festive patterns in the DSP.

The best part is that this project is easier to make than you might think! With my step-by-step tutorial and template, you can create your own personalised card holder ready for Christmas gifting.

Whether you want to organise your own handmade cards or make something special for a friend, this project is a lovely way to combine creativity with practicality.

A Handmade Christmas Gift with a Practical Purpose

I love papercrafting projects that are not only pretty but useful too, and this card holder ticks both boxes.

The holder has two separate compartments, allowing you to keep your cards and envelopes together without them becoming muddled. One side is perfect for storing your handmade cards, while the other can hold the envelopes ready for when you want to send them.

You could fill the holder with a selection of handmade Christmas cards and matching envelopes to create a complete gift. Alternatively, leave it empty and let the recipient use it to organise their own stationery.

It would also make a lovely addition to your craft room, keeping your cards neatly stored and easy to reach.

Choosing Your Colours and Designer Series Paper

For these examples, I have created two different versions to show how changing the cardstock can give the same project a different look.

Cherry Cobbler Card Holder

Cherry Cobbler gives the holder a rich, traditional Christmas feel. I have paired it with the festive patterns from A Little Christmas DSP, including the sweet mice and Christmas bow designs. The warm red cardstock brings out the seasonal colours in the paper and creates a lovely coordinated finish.

Lost Lagoon Card Holder

For the second holder, I chose Lost Lagoon cardstock. The soft blue-green shade complements the illustrated Christmas scenes in A Little Christmas DSP beautifully. It creates a slightly different festive look while still feeling traditional and seasonal.

Both versions feature decorated panels of Designer Series Paper on the outside, allowing the patterns to stand out without overwhelming the design.

You could, of course, experiment with your own favourite Christmas papers and cardstock colours to make a holder that suits your style.

How to Make Your Card Holder

Follow along with my step-by-step video tutorial to see how I assemble the holder and decorate it using A Little Christmas DSP.

Step 1: Prepare Your Cardstock

Start by cutting and scoring your cardstock using the measurements and template provided with this project. Take your time with the scoring, as neat folds will help your finished card holder look professional.

Choose Cherry Cobbler or Lost Lagoon cardstock, depending on which colour combination you prefer.

Step 2: Create the Holder Structure

Follow the template to fold and assemble the cardstock into the holder shape. Carefully crease each scored line and check that the sections fold neatly into place.

Make sure the two compartments are formed correctly so that you have separate spaces for your cards and envelopes.

Step 3: Decorate with A Little Christmas DSP

Cut your chosen Designer Series Paper panels to fit the outside of the holder. The festive illustrations are the perfect way to add character and colour to the project.

Before adhering the panels, arrange them on the cardstock to check that you are happy with the placement of the patterns. This is particularly useful if you want to feature a favourite design or make sure the illustrations are positioned neatly.

Step 4: Assemble and Secure the Holder

Once the decorative panels are in place, finish assembling the holder according to the template. Check that the sides and base are secure and that both compartments can hold your cards and envelopes comfortably.

Allow any adhesive to dry before adding your cards and envelopes.

Step 5: Fill Your Handmade Card Holder

Your card holder is now ready to use!

Place your handmade cards in one compartment and the coordinating envelopes in the other. If you are giving it as a Christmas gift, you could add a selection of festive cards so the recipient has everything ready for the Christmas season.

You could even make a matching set of gift tags to complete the presentation.

If you would like to see exactly how I put this project together, watch my video tutorial. I demonstrate the construction of the holder and show you how I use the A Little Christmas DSP to decorate the finished project.

Make It Your Own

One of the things I love about handmade gifts is how easily you can personalise them. Although I have used A Little Christmas DSP for these festive card holders, the same idea could be adapted for birthdays, thank-you cards or everyday greetings.

Choose floral papers for a springtime gift, elegant patterns for a wedding stationery organiser, or bright colours for a cheerful addition to your craft room.

You could also coordinate the cardstock with the recipient’s favourite colours to make the gift even more personal.

A Lovely Christmas Gift for Cardmakers

These handmade card holders are a practical and thoughtful Christmas gift for anyone who enjoys sending cards. The two compartments keep cards and envelopes organised, while the decorated exterior makes the holder attractive enough to display on a desk or craft table.

I particularly love how the Cherry Cobbler and Lost Lagoon versions show just how different the same project can look when you change the cardstock colour.

Why not make one for yourself and another as a gift? You could even fill them with handmade Christmas cards to create a complete present that is ready to give.
