Radiant Sunflowers – Let’s Play With The Die Cuts – Card Tutorial. – Crafting with Ashee – Independent Stampin’ Up! Demo – Lincoln UK.

There is something so cheerful about sunflowers, and today’s cards are all about letting those beautiful die cuts take centre stage.

For these two cards, I’ve used the Radiant Sunflowers stamp and die set along with the gorgeous Sunflower Fields Designer Series Paper. The combination of bright yellow sunflowers, rich green leaves and pretty patterned paper creates two cards that feel wonderfully warm and uplifting.

The best part? These cards are a great example of how you can use die-cut pieces to create a beautiful focal point without making the card overly complicated.

Two Cards, Two Different Colour Combinations

I decided to make two versions of the card, changing the card base colour for each one.

The first card uses Daffodil Delight, which works beautifully with the bright yellow sunflower die cuts. The second uses Mossy Meadow, giving the card a slightly deeper and more autumnal feel.

Both cards use the same basic design, but changing the card base gives each one its own character.

Playing With Sunflower Die Cuts

The star of these cards is definitely the collection of die-cut sunflowers.

I used the dies from the Radiant Sunflowers stamp and die set to cut the sunflower pieces and leaves. Rather than simply arranging everything in a straight line, I played around with the different sizes and positions until I was happy with the arrangement.

This is one of my favourite things about working with dies. You can cut several pieces and then move them around your card until you find an arrangement that works.

I layered the sunflowers together to give them more dimension and added the darker centres to make the yellow flowers really stand out.

Don’t be afraid to let some of your die cuts overlap the edges of other elements. It helps to create a fuller, more natural-looking floral arrangement.

Adding The Sunflower Fields Designer Series Paper

The Sunflower Fields Designer Series Paper does a lot of the work on these cards.

I particularly like how the different patterns work together. The strip of green patterned paper creates a lovely background for the sunflowers, while the floral section adds another layer of interest.

When using patterned paper, you don’t necessarily need lots of embellishments. Choosing a few coordinating patterns and allowing them to do the talking can create a really effective card design.

A Little Ribbon Adds The Finishing Touch

To add another layer of texture, I used the Mossy Meadow checked ribbon.

The checked pattern works particularly well with the sunflower and leafy elements. I tucked the ribbon underneath the floral arrangement and allowed the ends to hang freely.

Ribbon is such an easy way to add texture to a card, and it doesn’t take much to make a difference. A small loop or a couple of lengths of ribbon can be enough to bring the whole design together.

Finishing With A Sentiment

The sentiments are also from the Radiant Sunflowers stamp and die set.

For the card on the right, I used the sentiment “Wishing You So Much Happiness”, which fits perfectly with the cheerful sunflower design.

The other card has a simple “Enjoy” sentiment, showing how changing the greeting can completely change the purpose of the card.

You could easily adapt this design for a birthday, thank you, thinking of you or simply-to-brighten-someone’s-day card.

Measurements

• Daffodil Delight / Mossy Meadow Cardstock – A6 Card Base – This is an A4 sheet cut in half, then folded in half.
• Basic White Cardstock – 14.35 cm x 10 cm x 2 pieces
• Sunflower Fields designer series paper (DSP) –
  • 13.85 cm x 9.5 cm x 1 piece
  • A strip that is 7cm wide
  • A strip that is 4.5cm wide

Why I Love This Card Design

What I particularly like about these cards is that they look more complicated than they actually are.

The combination of:

• A pretty Designer Series Paper background
• Layered sunflower die cuts
• A few leafy die cuts
• A touch of checked ribbon
• A simple sentiment

is enough to create a card with plenty of texture and interest.

It is also a great design to recreate if you have lots of die-cut pieces left over from previous projects. Instead of putting those pieces away and forgetting about them, why not use them to create a floral arrangement on your next card?

Let’s Play With The Die Cuts

If you sometimes struggle with how to arrange die cuts on your cards, I hope this project encourages you to simply play.

Cut several different pieces, place them on your card without sticking anything down and try different arrangements. Move the flowers around, change the height of the leaves and experiment with overlapping the pieces.

You might be surprised at how many different designs you can create from exactly the same die cuts.

And remember, it doesn’t have to be perfect. Sometimes the most interesting arrangements are the ones that look a little more natural and relaxed.
