If you’ve been following along with my One Background Stamp, Five Different Techniques series, welcome to Technique 4! Today we’re exploring one of my favourite techniques for creating bold, vibrant backgrounds with very little effort – the Emboss Resist Technique.

Using just one background stamp, clear embossing powder and a few ink colours, you can create stunning cards that really make the embossed design stand out. This technique is always so satisfying because the magic happens as you blend the ink over the embossed image and watch the pattern appear before your eyes.

What is the Emboss Resist Technique?

The emboss resist technique is wonderfully simple but incredibly effective. The background stamp is first stamped in Versamark Ink and heat embossed using Clear Embossing Powder. Once the embossed image has cooled, you can blend your chosen ink colours over the entire panel.

Because the embossing powder creates a protective barrier, the ink sits only on the exposed cardstock while the embossed areas resist the colour, leaving the beautiful leafy design crisp and bright.

It’s an excellent technique for beginners and experienced crafters alike, and it works beautifully with detailed background stamps like Moody Leaves.

Soft Ink Blending Makes All the Difference

For both cards I used the Small Blending Brush, as I find it gives much better control when working on smaller card fronts. Rather than applying heavy colour straight away, I built up the ink gradually using a very light hand.

Layering the colours slowly creates much smoother transitions and allows you to control exactly where the darker shades appear. Taking your time with the blending gives a much softer, more professional finish.

Once all the blending was complete, I gently buffed the embossed surface with a clean cloth. This removes any ink sitting on top of the clear embossing and brings back the bright white embossed image, making the design really pop.

Bright, Warm Autumn Tones

The first card combines warm, cheerful colours:

  • Daffodil Delight
  • Crushed Curry
  • Timid Tiger

The gradual blending creates a glowing background that really highlights every leaf in the Moody Leaves design. Mounted onto a Timid Tiger card base, the finished card feels bright, warm and full of energy.

Cool Coastal Colours

For a completely different look, the second card uses cooler shades:

  • Coastal Cabana
  • Pool Party
  • Lost Lagoon

Although exactly the same technique was used, these colours give the background a fresh, calming feel. Layering the darker Lost Lagoon over the lighter blues creates beautiful depth while still allowing the white embossed leaves to take centre stage.

The panel is finished on a Coastal Cabana card base, perfectly complementing the blended background.

One Technique, Endless Colour Combinations

One of the reasons I love the emboss resist technique is how versatile it is. Simply changing the ink colours completely transforms the finished project.

Whether you prefer bright seasonal shades, soft pastels or rich jewel tones, this technique works beautifully with almost any colour combination. It’s also a fantastic way to get more from your background stamps, giving them a completely different look each time you use them.

The camper van card has a fun travel theme, complete with a vintage camera and the sentiment Wishing You Were Here. It’s ideal for anyone who loves travelling, camping or road trips, and would also make a wonderful holiday postcard-style greeting.

Although these cards use completely different ephemera pieces, they share the same simple layout, showing just how versatile these packs really are.

A Fun Take on the Slice and Shuffle Technique. – Everyday Essentials – Crafting with Ashee – Independent Stampin’ Up! Demo – Lincoln UK.

If you’re looking for a simple cardmaking technique that creates a striking design with very little effort, then you’re going to love today’s project! The Slice and Shuffle Technique is a fantastic way to make the most of your Designer Series Paper while creating modern, eye-catching layouts.

For today’s cards, I’ve used the beautiful Everyday Essentials Designer Series Paper paired with a Lost Lagoon card base. To finish the designs, I’ve added elements from the Sincerely Noted and Meant For You Mix & Match Ephemera Packs, making these cards quick, stylish and perfect for a variety of occasions.

What is the Slice and Shuffle Technique?

The Slice and Shuffle Technique is exactly as it sounds. You cut your patterned paper into sections, rearrange the pieces, and then mount them back onto your card with small gaps between each section.

It’s an incredibly versatile technique because you can:

  • Use one sheet of Designer Series Paper or mix different patterns together.
  • Change the angle of the cuts for a completely different look.
  • Create birthday, thank you, sympathy or celebration cards simply by changing the embellishments and sentiment.

It’s one of those techniques that looks far more complicated than it actually is.

Why I Love This Layout

One of my favourite things about this design is how it showcases multiple patterns without the card feeling too busy.

The soft green floral pattern and coordinating striped paper from the Everyday Essentials DSP work beautifully together, while the soft pink panel adds balance and warmth. The crisp white borders between each section help define the individual pieces and make the whole design really stand out.

Using Lost Lagoon as the card base ties everything together perfectly and gives the card a fresh, elegant finish.

Mix & Match Makes Cardmaking So Easy

The Sincerely Noted and Meant For You Mix & Match Ephemera Packs are perfect for this style of card.

Rather than stamping and die cutting, you can simply choose the images and sentiments that suit your occasion. It’s a brilliant way to create beautiful handmade cards in less time, making these products ideal whether you’re a beginner or an experienced crafter.

For these cards I’ve created two completely different occasions using exactly the same layout:

  • A cheerful birthday card featuring colourful balloons and a simple “Hooray!” sentiment.
  • A lovely thank you card decorated with a beautiful floral bouquet and coordinating sentiment.

This shows just how versatile one card sketch can be.

Make It Your Own

The beauty of the Slice and Shuffle Technique is that every card will be unique.

Why not try experimenting with:

  • Different Designer Series Papers.
  • Seasonal colour combinations.
  • Metallic cardstock between the sections.
  • Raised panels using Stampin’ Dimensionals for added depth.
  • Different ephemera pieces or stamped focal images.

You could even make several cards at once by cutting multiple pieces of Designer Series Paper together and mixing the sections between cards.

Measurements

  • Lost Lagoon Cardstock – A6 Card Base – A4 sheet cut in half and then folded in half.
  • Basic White Cardstock – 14.35cm X 10cm X 2 pieces.
  • Everyday Essentials designer series paper (DSP) – 13.85cm X 9.5cm X 3 pieces.

Final Thoughts

Sometimes the simplest techniques create the biggest impact, and the Slice and Shuffle Technique is a perfect example of that. It’s quick, uses up those treasured pieces of Designer Series Paper, and creates a design that’s both clean and contemporary.

Whether you’re making cards for birthdays, thank you notes or just because, this is a layout you’ll find yourself coming back to time and time again.

Create Cheerful Handmade Thank You Cards with Beautiful Ordinary DSP

There’s something special about sending a handmade thank you card, and these bright and cheerful designs are perfect for showing your appreciation in style. Featuring the gorgeous Beautiful Ordinary Designer Series Paper, layered blooms from the Scalloped Blooms Dies, and sentiments from the Greetings For All Ephemera Pack, these cards are full of colour, texture, and charm.

The combination of bold patterns, layered flowers, and simple sentiments creates eye-catching cards that look impressive but are surprisingly easy to make.

A Colourful Combination of Pattern and Layers

One of my favourite things about these cards is how the patterned paper does much of the hard work. The Beautiful Ordinary DSP features fresh, vibrant designs that instantly brighten any project.

For both cards, I used pieces of DSP to create decorative tags that become the focal point of the design. This is a great way to make the most of your patterned papers while adding an extra layer of interest without needing lots of additional supplies.

The layered flowers were created using the Scalloped Blooms Dies, giving each card a lovely dimensional element. A few sparkly embellishments add the perfect finishing touch.

Pretty Peacock and Petal Pink

The first card features a rich Pretty Peacock card base paired with layered blooms in Pool Party and Petal Pink.

The soft floral colours contrast beautifully against the deeper card base, creating a fresh and elegant look. Combined with the striped Beautiful Ordinary DSP, the result is a card that feels both modern and cheerful.

The simple “Thanks” sentiment from the Greetings For All Ephemera Pack keeps the design clean and allows the colours and layers to take centre stage.

Melon Mambo and Petal Pink

For the second card, I chose a vibrant Melon Mambo card base and layered the flowers using Melon Mambo and Petal Pink cardstock.

This version has a completely different feel despite using the same layout. The bright pink tones bring lots of energy to the design, while the Petal Pink softens the overall look and adds balance.

The honeycomb-inspired pattern from the Beautiful Ordinary DSP works perfectly with the bold floral layers, creating a fun and uplifting thank you card that would brighten anyone’s day.

Why I Love This Design

These cards are a great reminder that you don’t need complicated techniques to create something beautiful. By combining:

  • Patterned paper
  • Layered die-cut flowers
  • Simple sentiments
  • A few embellishments

You can quickly create cards that look polished and professional.

This design is also wonderfully versatile. Simply change the colours, DSP patterns, or sentiment and you can easily adapt it for birthdays, celebrations, thinking of you cards, or just because.

Perfect for Using Your DSP Collection

If you’re anything like me, you probably have lots of beautiful patterned paper that you’re saving for the perfect project. This card layout is an excellent way to showcase those gorgeous designs while still incorporating die-cut details and embellishments.

The tag element provides a lovely area to display your sentiment, and because it’s made from DSP, every card can look completely different depending on the pattern you choose.

Recycle Your Chipboard for Sturdy Covers

One of my favourite parts of this project is using recycled chipboard. If you’ve ever purchased Mix & Match Ephemera Packs, you’ll know they come with sturdy backing boards—perfect for this!

Simply cut the chipboard down to size and wrap it with your chosen cardstock. This creates a strong and durable cover while also being a great way to reduce waste in your craft room.

Beautiful Folio Style Design

This notebook is designed in a folio style, which gives it that professional, polished look. When opened, it reveals a coordinated interior with the same beautiful floral paper flowing throughout.

The structure feels really special—almost like opening a little book or keepsake—making it ideal for gifting.

Ribbon Closure for the Finishing Touch

To keep everything neatly closed, I’ve added a ribbon tie closure. Not only is this practical, but it also adds a soft and elegant finishing touch that complements the overall design beautifully.

A Closer Look at the Design

The focal point of both cards is the fabulous layered camera from the Capturing Smiles Bundle. I die cut and assembled the different elements to give depth and dimension, allowing all the lovely details to stand out beautifully.

Inside the film strip, I created two different looks:

  • On the Pretty in Pink card base, I added sweet heart images for a playful and cheerful feel.
  • On the Summer Splash card base, I used simple black stamped scenic images for a clean, graphic style.

This really shows how versatile the bundle is — simply changing what appears inside the film strip completely transforms the finished look.

Designer Series Paper from the 24–26 In Colour Pack

Rather than ink blending, the soft patterned background behind the focal block is Designer Series Paper from the 24–26 In Colour pack. The subtle texture and colour variation in the paper adds interest while keeping the design cohesive.

Using patterned paper in this way is a great time-saver and gives a professional finish without any extra techniques. It also coordinates perfectly with the Pretty in Pink and Summer Splash card bases.

To frame the focal panel, I added a thin strip of foil edge along the border. This small detail introduces a touch of shine and really elevates the overall design.

Sentiments that Stand Out

The bold sentiments are from the Greetings for All Ephemera Pack, and they complement the playful camera theme perfectly.

  • “Oh, happy day!” adds a fun and celebratory feel.
  • “Best Wishes” keeps the design versatile for a range of occasions.

Because these are ready-made ephemera pieces, they make cardmaking quick and effortless while still looking polished and impactful.

Texture and Finishing Touches

Both cards feature embossed white panels to add subtle texture and break up the layers. A few coordinating embellishments finish each design and tie the colour scheme together beautifully.

Layering stencils are one of my favourite tools for creating detailed, eye-catching backgrounds with little effort – and today’s cards are the perfect example of just how effective they can be. Using the Layers of Beauty stamp set, along with its coordinating dies and layering stencils, I’ve created two floral cards that are full of colour, depth and elegance.

If you love the look of hand-coloured images but want a quicker, more consistent result, layering stencils are an absolute game-changer.

Why Layering Stencils Are So Effective

The Layers of Beauty set is designed to make colouring easy and enjoyable. Each stencil layer builds on the last, allowing you to add highlights, shadows and depth without needing advanced colouring techniques. Colour Combinations That Bring the Florals to Life

For these cards, I’ve created two different colourways to show just how versatile this set can be.

The first card features a soft yet rich floral palette using:

  • Bubble Gum
  • Berry Burst
  • Blackberry Bliss

This combination gives the flowers a romantic feel, with the deeper tones adding lovely contrast and definition.

The second card has a warmer, bolder look, using:

  • Calypso Coral
  • Poppy Parade
  • Cherry Cobbler

These colours work beautifully together to create vibrant, striking florals that really stand out against the background.

Changing the colour palette alone gives the same design a completely different mood, making this set ideal for building a varied card collection.

Adding Vellum for Softness and Dimension

To help the sentiment and extra floral image stand out, I’ve added vellum across the bottom of each card. This simple layer softens the busy floral background while still allowing the design underneath to show through.

Vellum is such a great way to add separation without hiding your hard work, and it also adds a touch of elegance and dimension to the finished card.

The sentiments come from the Greetings For You ephemera pack, which makes finishing a card quick and easy while still looking polished and professional.

If you love bold colour combinations and lots of lovely texture, today’s cards are for you! I’m sharing two bright and cheerful card designs created using the Sweet Jar stamp and punch bundle, where the focus is all about playing with colour and texture to create cards that really pop.

These designs are perfect for birthdays, celebrations, or simply sending happy mail, and they’re a great example of how changing colour palettes can completely transform the same layout.

Colour and Texture as the Star of the Show

Both cards feature backgrounds made up of various coloured cardstock panels, all embossed using the Forever Plaid 3D embossing folder. This embossing folder adds instant depth and interest, making it ideal for adding texture without overwhelming the design.

Using multiple colours together creates a patchwork-style background that feels playful and modern, while the embossed plaid pattern ties everything together beautifully.

Sweet Jar Focal Point

The focal point on each card is the adorable Sweet Jar image, stamped and then punched out using the coordinating punch. This bundle makes it so easy to create clean, professional-looking focal images with minimal effort.

The jar is mounted onto a layered panel to help it stand out against the textured background, drawing the eye straight to the centre of the card. Small embellishments are scattered across the card fronts to add a subtle sparkle and extra dimension.

The first card features a vibrant mix of:

  • Melon Mambo
  • Lemon Lolly
  • Soft Sea Foam
  • Coastal Cabana
  • Lost Lagoon

This colour combination feels fresh, fun, and perfect for uplifting cards. The bold Melon Mambo panel grounds the design, while the softer shades balance everything out beautifully.

The sentiment is taken from the Greetings for You ephemera pack, making it quick and easy to finish the card while keeping the design clean and uncluttered.

Card Two – Soft Yet Playful Tones- Retiring 24 – 26 In colours.

The second card uses a softer but still playful colour palette:

  • Petunia Pop
  • Peach Pie
  • Pretty in Pink
  • Summer Splash
  • Shy Shamrock

This combination creates a warm, happy feel that works wonderfully for congratulatory cards. Using the same layout as the first card really highlights how different colour choices can give a completely new look and feel.

Again, the sentiment comes from the Greetings for You ephemera pack, proving just how versatile these ready-made sentiments are.

Using one layout with two different colour palettes is a fantastic way to:

Today I’m sharing these super cute Christmas Candy Cane Pouches — a quick and cheerful project that’s perfect for the festive season. These pouches are ideal for stocking fillers, table favours, teacher gifts, or a little something extra to pop into a neighbour’s letterbox. They look gorgeous, yet they come together in minutes, making them excellent for batch-making.

Three Designs, Endless Possibilities

I created three variations to show how easily you can switch up the look simply by changing the cardstock and paper:

  • Real Red + Traditions of Christmas DSP – A bright and classic Christmas design with traditional poinsettias and rich festive tones.
  • Garden Green + Christmas Tags & More DSP – A fun and playful version with candy canes and cheerful patterns.
  • Real Red + North Pole Delivery DSP – A nostalgic, postage-themed design that feels wonderfully whimsical and perfect for gifting.

Each pouch is decorated using a selection of die-cuts from the Christmas Tags & More DSP, along with coordinating Greetings for You cardstock stickers. These elements make decorating quick, easy, and beautifully cohesive.

Simple to Make, Fun to Gift

These pouches hold two candy canes comfortably and can be adapted to suit almost any occasion. You could easily swap the treats for chocolate sticks, mini gifts, pencils, or even a wrapped biscuit. They’re the perfect project if you enjoy creating small, yet meaningful, handmade gifts.

You’ll find that the construction is wonderfully straightforward. All you need is cardstock, your chosen DSP, adhesive, and a few embellishments. I’ll add a full supply list and measurements at the end of this post so you can recreate them exactly.

Creating with the Snowy Delights Bundle

Today, I’m sharing this beautiful snowflake Christmas card made with the Snowy Delights bundle. This bundle is a real showstopper—it includes a photopolymer stamp set, coordinating layering stencils, and matching dies, giving you endless ways to design wintery cards.

The large layered snowflake on my card is created with the stencil set. There are four stencil layers, and each one comes with a notch at the top. Once you’ve lined up the first stencil, the rest slot easily into place using the same notch marking. It’s such a simple system, yet it gives you a professional, detailed result every time.

The Colour Blends that Make It Shine

For the snowflake in the photo above, I chose a soft but striking palette of Soft Sea Foam, Pool Party, Coastal Cabana, and Pretty Peacock. The colours blend together beautifully and really pop against the darker background, which creates a frosty, winter sky effect.

I also tried another variation using Soft Sea Foam, Pool Party, Azure Afternoon, and Blueberry Bushell. This brighter combination adds a cool, icy feel with a hint of depth from the darker blue tones—perfect for bold Christmas cards.

Adding Sparkle and Sentiment

To finish the card, I added a “Merry Christmas” sentiment from the Greetings For You gold foiled ephemera pack. The gold foiling ties in perfectly with the festive season and adds just the right amount of shimmer.

For a touch of extra sparkle, I embellished the background with gold gems. They draw the eye to the centrepiece snowflake and give the card a polished, celebratory feel.
