You Don’t Need the Whole Stamp! Die-Cut a Background Stamp for a Unique Card – Moody Leaves – Crafting with Ashee – Independent Stampin’ Up! Demo.

Have you ever looked at a large background stamp and thought you had to use the entire stamped image on your card? You really don’t! Sometimes the best way to use a background stamp is to stamp the whole design and then simply choose the part you want to feature.

For the fifth and final technique in my 1 Background Stamp, 5 Different Techniques series, I’m showing you how to die-cut a background stamp to create a unique card design.

I’ve been using the Moody Leaves background stamp throughout this series, and I wanted to finish with a technique that shows just how versatile a large background stamp can be.

Stamp the Background – Then Cut It Down

For this technique, I started by stamping the Moody Leaves background stamp. Rather than using the whole stamped piece, I selected a section of the design that I particularly liked.

I then used one of the circle dies from the Spotlight on Nature Dies to die-cut the stamped image.

This is such a simple idea, but it can completely change the look of a background stamp.

Instead of having the entire stamped image covering the card, you can choose a small section and turn it into the main focal point. You could use a circle, square, rectangle or even a more decorative die, depending on the look you want to achieve.

Two Colour Combinations, Two Very Different Looks

I made two cards using exactly the same technique, but changed the colour combination to show how different the finished cards can look.

The first card uses Cherry Cobbler. The rich red works beautifully with the leafy Moody Leaves design and gives the card a warm, traditional feel.

For the second card, I used Pretty Peacock. This gorgeous deep teal gives the same design a completely different personality and creates a lovely contrast against the white background.

This is one of the things I love about stamping – you can take exactly the same design and make it look completely different simply by changing the colours.

Add Texture to the Background

Once I had created my die-cut stamped pieces, I wanted to add some extra interest to the Basic White card layer.

I ran the Basic White layer through the Stone & Vine 3D Embossing Folder. The delicate embossed pattern adds texture without distracting from the bold die-cut Moody Leaves image.

I particularly like using an embossed background with a stamped focal point because it creates lots of interest while still keeping the overall design clean and simple.

Don’t Throw Away the Rest of Your Stamping!

One of the best things about this technique is that you don’t have to use the whole stamped piece – and that means you can save the remaining pieces for another project!

Once you’ve die-cut your favourite section, take a look at what’s left. There may be another beautiful area of the background stamp that would work perfectly on a future card.

You could even die-cut several different shapes from one stamped sheet and have a collection of focal points ready to use.

This is also a great way to get more from your background stamps and make your crafting supplies work harder for you.

Finishing the Cards

To finish both cards, I added a sentiment from Fabulous Sayings. This was an old Product of the Month set, and the handwritten-style sentiment works beautifully with the organic leaf design.

The sentiment reads “you’re on my mind”, making these cards perfect for sending to someone just to let them know you’re thinking of them.

I kept the sentiment fairly simple so that the die-cut stamped image remains the star of the card.

Why This Background Stamp Technique Works

I think this is such a useful technique to have in your crafting toolbox because it changes the way you look at background stamps.

A background stamp doesn’t always have to be a background!

You can:

• Stamp the whole image and die-cut a small section.
• Choose your favourite part of the stamped design.
• Create several focal points from one stamped piece.
• Use different die shapes for completely different effects.
• Try different colours to change the mood of the card.
• Combine your stamped piece with an embossed background for extra texture.

And perhaps most importantly, you don’t need to use the whole stamp!

This is the fifth and final technique in my 1 Background Stamp, 5 Different Techniques series.

Over the course of the series, I’ve been exploring different ways to use one background stamp, showing that you don’t need lots of different products to create a variety of card designs.

For this final project, I wanted to show that sometimes the simplest idea can make the biggest difference. Stamp it, find your favourite part and die-cut it!

So, next time you reach for a background stamp, don’t automatically think you need to use the entire image. Try stamping it first and then look at it with fresh eyes. Which part catches your attention? That’s the part you should use!
