Gold Foiling Dies with Matching Stencils – Learn a New Technique – Butterfly Flight Foil Dies – Crafting with Ashee – Independent Stampin’ Up! Demo – UK.

If you love adding a little bit of luxury to your handmade cards, you’re going to love this project! Today I’m sharing two colourful butterfly cards featuring the Butterflight Dies, their matching stencils and a touch of beautiful gold foiling.

This is such a fun technique because the dies do more than simply cut out the butterfly. The matching stencils make it really easy to add colour to the individual sections of the butterfly, while the foiling adds a gorgeous, elegant finish.

Adding Colour with the Butterflight Matching Stencils

For these cards, I wanted to create two completely different colour combinations while keeping the overall design the same.

The Butterflight Dies have matching stencils, which makes colouring the butterflies surprisingly quick and easy. I used blending brushes to apply the ink through the stencils, building up the colour gradually to create bright, colourful butterflies.

For the first card, I used:

• Pumpkin Pie
• Daffodil Delight

The combination of warm orange and yellow gives these butterflies a lovely sunny, cheerful look.

For the second card, I went for cooler colours using:

• Balmy Blue
• Azure Afternoon

I really love how different the same butterfly looks simply by changing the colours. It’s a great reminder that you can take the same design and make it work for completely different occasions just by changing your colour palette.

Adding Gold Foiling to the Butterflies

Now for my favourite part – the gold foiling!

Once the butterflies had been coloured and die cut, I used the foiling dies to add the beautiful gold details. The gold foil really brings the butterfly design to life and gives the cards a much more luxurious finish.

I think the combination of the bright blended colours with the shiny gold details works particularly well. The butterflies almost look as though they have been painted and gilded.

If you haven’t tried foiling on your handmade cards yet, this is a lovely way to introduce the technique. The foiled detail is subtle enough to complement the colouring, but it catches the light beautifully.

A Simple Background Makes the Butterflies Stand Out

For the background, I used the Painted Patterns Brights Designer Series Paper. I chose striped designs in Melon Mambo for the pink card and Azure Afternoon for the blue card.

The stripes give the cards plenty of interest without competing with the butterflies.

I also like how the colours of the DSP coordinate with the colours used on the butterflies. It helps everything feel connected, while the white card base keeps the overall design fresh and bright.

Adding the Gold Foiled Sentiments

I carried the foiling through to the sentiments too. The sentiments are from the Sweetly Sentimental set and have also been gold foiled.

I used a different sentiment on each card, including Happy Birthday, Have a Lovely Day, Cheers to You and Just a Little Hello.

Having several small sentiments makes this design really versatile. You could easily change the sentiment to suit a birthday, thank-you card, congratulations or simply a little note to let someone know you’re thinking of them.

Why I Love This Technique

What I particularly like about this project is that it combines several techniques without making the cards complicated.

You have:

• Colouring with the matching Butterflight stencils
• Blending with blending brushes
• Die cutting
• Gold foiling
• Patterned paper
• Heat-foiled sentiments

Yet the finished cards still have a clean and simple feel.

The Butterflight Dies and matching stencils do most of the hard work for you, so you can concentrate on experimenting with colours and creating butterflies that are completely your own.

Try Your Own Colour Combination

I think these butterflies would look fabulous in so many different colour combinations. Why not try pinks and purples, greens and blues, or even a rainbow of colours?

You could also use the same technique to create a whole collection of butterflies ready to add to cards whenever you need them.

And if you don’t have a foiling system yet, you could still use the matching stencils and dies to create beautiful butterflies. The foiling simply adds that extra touch of shine when you want something a little more special.

I hope these cards have inspired you to have a go at combining stencils, die cutting and gold foiling. Sometimes combining a few simple techniques can create a card that looks much more complicated than it really is!
